The Department of Computer Science was created in 2006 when the Department of Mathematical Sciences was split into two units: the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Department of Computer Science. Within the Department of Mathematical Sciences, however, a B.S. program in computer science was offered since 1991, and an M.S. degree program was offered since 1998. Computer science courses existed for over a decade prior to the creation of the department as part of a computer science concentration within the mathematics B.S. degree.
