Martha Elizabeth Winfield was a graduate of the State Normal and Industrial College (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro) in 1906. After graduating, she became a member of the English Department, working from 1906 until her death in 1936. Through studies pursued while on leaves of absence, Winfield received her B.WS. and M.A. degrees from Columbia University, in 1915, and 1923, respectively. The Weil-Winfield Residence Hall is partially named in her honor.
